How old is this elevator machine?
I work as an elevator constructor in NYC. I am working in a very old building on 23rd st and found a brass tag on the elevator machine casing that has patents from 1885 to 1895 on it. The elevator shaft has wooden rails which leads me to believe it is a turn of the century installation. The machine was made by A.B.See Mfg in Brooklyn, NY. I’m curious if the patent dates are the approximate age of the machine, or if the machine was made in the mid 1900’s under the technology of those patents. Any ideas? I can’t even find info on AB See Mfg on the net. I really don’t need to know this, it’s just for history’s sake.
I searched “A. B. See Manufacturing” using http://www.google.com/patents?hl=en and found 6 patents assigned to A. B. See with dates from 1895 to 1900. One of the inventors is listed as Alonzo B. See. There is a short article in Wikipedia indicating that his elevator company was sold to Westinghouse in 1937.
Patents might well be marked on products for at least the 20 years or so during which the inventor or assignee has exclusive rights under the patent. You could expect that A. B. See Mfg. might have started using the technology covered by their 1899 and 1900 patents when it became available, but they may have continued to manufacture elevators of earlier designs as well.
